In the Autumn Budget at the end of October 2024, the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves announced that Alcohol Duty rates would rise in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) from 1st February 2025, and that the temporary duty easement (dating back to 1st August 2023) for wines of 11.5%-14.5% ABV will end.
These changes will apply to all products, notably affecting wines of a higher ABV. The new rates from the 1st February 2025 will now be on a sliding scale (every 0.1%!) with duty dependent on alcohol content. In particular, the majority of red wines that sit at 14% and above, will see a staggering 20% increase.
